Volta Region Moves to Boost Practical Science Education as Educators Undergo Intensive 2-Day Training Workshop

HO, VOLTA REGION — In a major push to revitalize STEM education at the basic school level, Keep Premium Solutions (KPS), in collaboration with the Volta Regional Education Office, successfully hosted a two-day Practical Science Pedagogy Training of Trainers Workshop.

The event, which took place from May 28 to May 29, 2026, at the OLA Regional French Center in Ho, brought together 35 educators from various municipalities and districts, alongside six master trainers. The initiative directly addresses the critical gap in practical, hands-on activities in basic school science classrooms across the region.

Equipping Trainers for Regional Impact

The primary objective of the workshop was to equip district-level educators with practical skills they can replicate in their respective localities, creating a sustainable ripple effect of improved science instruction.

Over the two-day period, participants engaged in rigorous, curriculum-aligned practical sessions designed to make abstract scientific concepts accessible to young learners. The training prioritized the use of innovative tools and locally available materials, making science education both cost-effective and engaging.

Hands-On Science and Digital Innovation

The workshop split educators into collaborative groups, rotating them through a series of foundational, curriculum-indexed practical activities:

Physical Experiments: Educators constructed electrical circuits, demonstrated how light travels in a straight line, built models of the human respiratory system, filtered and separated mixtures, constructed artificial wells, and generated electricity using fruit cells (lemons) to light LED bulbs.

Digital Simulations: Facilitators Bernard and Godwin Agbodzi introduced participants to PhET Interactive Simulations, demonstrating how digital software can effectively teach complex processes like photosynthesis and virtual circuit design.

Pedagogical Frameworks: The final sessions introduced Concept Maps, training the educators to use visual organization strategies to improve learner-centered instruction.

High-Level Support and Sustainability

The workshop attracted notable educational leadership from the region. Torgbui Dzidor, the Regional Basic Coordinator, officially opened the event, while the Regional STEM Coordinator and Regional Chairman Mr. Gordor visited to rally the participants. Furthermore, education officials Mr. Vidzro and Mr. Kenneth pledged their ongoing support to ensure the long-term implementation and sustainability of these teaching methods.

According to a workshop report prepared by facilitator Godwin Agbodzi, the event concluded seamlessly with high participant enthusiasm and zero disruptions.

"The practical activities enhanced participants’ understanding of learner-centered science instruction," Agbodzi noted. "The workshop achieved its objectives, strengthening participants' capacity to train other teachers and ultimately improving science education delivery across the Volta Region."
